Papers & Books on Process Methods

The list below provides a first and quick introduction into what process research is about. These papers can be considered to be a first port of call for those who want to start thinking about doing process research.

In addition, three links connect to longer lists with further information on Process Methods publications.

Methodological books and papers: provides in depth guidance of how to do process research. There exists a variety of process approaches and methods. These have been applied in various fields of study and this is reflected in what can be found in this section. Apart from studies in management topics like strategy, innovation, (institutional) entrepreneurship and organizational change, there is also a tradition of doing process studies in political theory and historical sociology.

Examples of process studies: work that has been introduced in this list is either an example of or a companion to a methodological piece from the second section or it is an example of a process study that contains an elaborate methods section.

Deeper Read: looks at the question of what process and process research is in some more depth. It contains more philosophical and theoretical work on the nature of process and the nature of process theory.

It would be nice to be able to say that the work that is listed here equals everything that has been published on process research and process methods. It is something that is being strived for with regard to the methodological books and papers list: to provide a complete list of published work on process methods and process methodology. However, reality probably will dictate that there always will be oversights. Any suggestions about published work that should be included in this list are greatly appreciated. Suggestions about suitable work to be listed in the other lists are welcome too. Please email Harry Sminia at the Management School, University of Sheffield, UK.
